There have been four previous meetings between these two players at all levels and Munar leads 3-1 on head to head.
This includes three matches at the highest level where Munar is 2-1 ahead and one on the Challenger circuit where Munar defeated Monteiro last year. Three of these matches have come on clay and Munar leads 2-1 there too.

Having come into this tournament on the back of just one match win from six attempts this season, Munar has been the second-favourite in both the rounds so far.
In the first, he was 11/10 to get past Alejandro Tabilo and he did just that in a gruelling three-setter that also saw two tie-breakers including a deciding one. And against Lorenzo Musetti who was the 2/5 favourite in the second, Munar came through in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals.
Munar was on court for an hour and a half in his 6-4, 6-4 win over the top seeded Musetti who failed to get past his opponent’s serve even once. This was after Munar had six break-points against him and saved every single one of them.
In turn, he broke Musetti twice and both times very early in the encounter.
Can Munar continue with the run and make it to a rare ATP semifinal having last done that in May 2021?

Much like Munar, Monteiro has had a wretched time on the tour as well having entered this tournament with just one main draw win from eight matches.
At this tournament in Santiago it hasn’t been too easy for Monteiro either but he has found a way to win back to back matches. In the first, Monteiro overcame Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets to set up a round of 16 meeting with Marco Cecchinato.
And against Cecchinato, Monteiro came back from a set down to defeat him in three. In a match lasting a shade under two hours, Monteiro won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to enter the last eight.
The question now is if Monteiro has enough fuel left in his tank to get the better of another player who looks to have surprised himself with his performances in this tournament so far.
In this battle between two players out of form, we will have to go with Munar’s younger legs to carry him through in three sets.
