Ireland clung on at the death to win the European Nations Championship by the slenderest of margins in Sotogrande.

The Boys in Green finished a combined four-over-par and were plus three for the final round and they just about held off a rampant Swiss side who were -6 on the final day to win by one.

Tramore’s Jack Hearn finished in a share of third place on two-under-par after final round of 75 as Walker Cup star James Ashfield claimed individual glory.

Sean Keeling of Roganstown was next best of the Irish on six-over-par after a final round of 77.

Malone’s Matthew McClean finished strong with a final round of 71 which included a crucial eagle on the par-5 14th while Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley came home with a 73.

It’s the first time since 2016 that Ireland have won the European Nations Championship and just the second time in their history.
