The world number five has been in some good rhythm and he showed that again in his quarterfinal match against Frances Tiafoe whom he defeated rather easily. Fritz came away a 6-3, 6-4 winner in a match that went on for an hour and 36 minutes.
While both players did well on their first serves, with Fritz winning 75% of those points and Tiafoe pegged at 76%, it was off the second serves that the difference shone through.
Fritz continued to do well off them while getting better of his opponent’s second serves 64% of the times. This also helped Fritz break his opponent twice in the match while holding serve every single time. He did face four break-points though.
This win follows a hard-fought victory over John Isner in the first round and a straight-set win against Denis Shapovalov in the second. He has now won seven in a row and looks ready for number eight.

It’s fast becoming a season to remember for Paul who had earlier reached the semifinal at the Australian Open. Here at the Acapulco Open, Paul has now won three successive matches without dropping a set and moved to the semifinal again.
The last of those wins came against Mackenzie McDonald, whom he defeated 6-2, 6-2 in a mere 61 minutes to set up this meeting with Fritz.
Paul faced just one break-point in the match and saved it while overcoming his opponent’s serve on four occasions – two in each of the sets. His serving was so difficult to surmount for McDonald that he dropped only nine points on serve in the entire match.
This result follows victories over Emilio Gomez and Michael Mmoh in the first two rounds for Paul.
Now comes Paul’s biggest test against a player who has been on a roll and been winning quite regularly. What can Paul do to turn that around?
Fritz will be a favourite and despite Paul’s obvious good form and talent we will have to back Fritz to win and win easily. Straight-set win for the world number five.
