FIBA Europe Board convenes in Portoroz, approves reshaping of EuroLeague Women

PORTOROZ (Slovenia) – The fourth meeting of the FIBA Europe Board, term of office 2023-27, was held in Portoroz, Slovenia, on Friday.

The session was chaired by FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa, with FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak also in attendance.

The following topics were discussed during the meeting:

EuroLeague Women 2024-25

A proposal, brought forward by the Competitions Commission, about reshaping the competition format of EuroLeague Women was approved by the Board – following consultation with the clubs that participated in the 2023-24 season.

The proposal calls for a Regular Season played in two group phases, with play-ins and a Final 6 (as opposed to the current Final 4) in place for the later stages of the competition.

The exact details of the new format that comes with a promise of more meaningful games will be announced in the coming days.

Club competitions 2023-24

The Board heard reports about the season ending of EuroLeague Women with the successful organization of the Final Four in Mersin, Türkiye.

It also received reports about the final stages of EuroCup Women, the FIBA Europe Cup and the Basketball Champions League, which was played on the innovative ASB GlassFloor in Belgrade.

National team competitions

The Board approved the dates for the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Pre-Qualifiers in August 2025 (2, 6, 9, 13, 16 and 20 August).

Commissions reports

Reports were given from the chairs of the Competition, Youth and Women’s Commissions about their respective bodies’ recent meetings and current state of affairs.

Competition regulations

The Board also approved some amendments to the FIBA Europe Competitions Regulations for the upcoming season. The majority of the changes regard definitions of existing points in the regulations and terminology.

Other matters

The next Board meeting will take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 28, 2024.
