Europe’s 20 safest cities with three in surprising country – full list

The top 20 safest cities in Europe have been named, and while some come as no surprise, one country remarkably claimed three top places in the list.

The safety index is derived from surveys conducted by visitors to the Numbeo website. Results are presented on a scale of zero to 100. If the city has a high safety index, it is considered very safe. The data is updated contituously, with historical indices also published periodically. 

Romania claimed three of the top 20 safest cities on the list, scoring well for crime, worries of cars being stolen, being subject to physical attack based on ethnicity or skin colour violent crimes including assult and armed robbery.

The Index takes into account the general perception of crime levels, the percieved safety through survey responses, property crimes and violent crimes, including worries about being mugged or robbed, corruption, bribery, knife crime and attacks over ethnicity, gender or religion. 

At the other end of the scale, Bradford and Coventry in the UK and Marseille in France were voted the list safe European cities, securing the top three positions for the most crime-ridden cities instead.
