Europe set to add 45,000 new hotel rooms in 2024

Europe is set to see the opening of 326 new hotels during 2024 – adding a total of 45,000 rooms across the continent – according to the latest industry data.

Figures from hotel sector analyst Lodging Econometrics (LE) showed that 45 hotels opened in Europe during the first three months of the year adding a total of around 6,000 new rooms.

Another 281 new properties are forecast to open during the rest of the year adding just over 39,000 rooms. Although overall numbers for 2024 were down from the company’s previous estimate of 350 new hotels and 48,600 rooms opening this year.

Next year is set to see even more new hotels opening across Europe with LE estimating another 367 properties and nearly 53,000 rooms in 2025.

Currently there are 1,705 hotel projects in the development “pipeline” across Europe, which would add just over 250,000 new rooms in total. Around 45 per cent of these projects (762 hotels) are already under construction.

The UK continues to dominate in terms of new hotel developments with 321 projects, putting it well ahead of Germany (180 hotels), France (130), Portugal (120) and Turkey (116). These top five countries account of 48 per cent of all planned new rooms in Europe.

In terms of cities, London is well ahead of other major European destinations with 80 projects in the pipeline, followed by Istanbul with 51 hotels and then Lisbon (37 projects).
