Borna Coric v Thanasi Kokkinakis
Borna Coric had a really short round 1 match on Tuesday but it didn’t happen that way because he smashed Dan Evans. The Brit retired at 2-2 in the first set and that might be a problem for the Croatian. Generally, you want to play those round one matches to get a good feeling for your tennis.
He could counter it by virtue of having played on those courts for years as a resident of Dubai but it will take him time to find his rhythm. Kokkinakis played and won his first-round match and he’s generally played really well recently.
A challenger trophy in Manama gave him confidence and I think he’ll battle hard in this one. He lost both matches to Coric last year and the Croatian is likely the better player overall but I don’t think he will have such an easy time this time.
I do expect a close match. Coric likely will win but I would not bet on it. The best bet is to take the over because I think we’ll see three matches.
Alexander Zverev v Christopher O’Connell
Both of these players scored really solid wins in the previous rounds. Zverev battled past a really solid Jiri Lehecka in the first round in three sets and promised a better level in the second set. He’s yet to hit a really high level since his return but in time he will.
O’Connell took out Ruusuvuori, a solid player who didn’t have his day. The Australian has been playing well in the Gulf for years. There is simply something that works well for him in these conditions and he’ll have a chance in this one.
Zverev is not unbeatable and he never faced the Australian which should make things a little bit more complicated. The key will be Zverev’s serve which needs to be present for him if he hopes to win. For O’Connell, it’s the same. He’ll need to serve well and return well.
I do think Zverev is looking better and better lately and I do think he’ll get this done. I could even see him winning in straight sets. There is good value in that.
Andrey Rublev v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Andrey Rublev is back to winning ways as he won the opening round of the Dubai. A former champion of this event Rublev is comfortable in Dubai and he’s looking really solid right now. Fokina has been playing decent tennis as of recently as well.
They played only once so far and Rublev won that match in four sets at Roland Garros. They never played on hard courts but Rublev is the far better player in these conditions. Even so, he’s vulnerable at the moment because he’s not trusting his tennis much lately.
The fact that Fokina has more wins than Rublev this year paints a clear picture. I could see the Spaniard winning this match, I think he’ll at least win a set so that makes the over a very good option.
The value is actually in backing Fokina altogether but I can’t get fully behind it so the over seems like a nice compromise. I need to see more from Rublev before I fully trust him again.
