After getting a first round bye, Baez did not face a lot of trouble in his second round match against Cristian Garin either. In a match lasting an hour and 23 minutes, Baez scored a 6-4, 6-3 win to make it to the quarterfinals, repeating what he had done in Rio last week.
Baez faced just one break-point in the entire match and saved that easily while getting the better of his opponent’s serve on three occasions.
Garin looked to have started off well enough when he held on to make it 4-4 in the first set but a late break to love turned the momentum around in Baez’s favour. From that point on Baez never lost control.
He lost just two points on his own serve in the second set and broke his opponent twice, including the ninth game in which he won the encounter off his fourth match-point.

Riccardo Bonadio isn’t a very well-known name in tennis circles having never been in the top 170 of the ATP Rankings but he did have a good week leading up to this second round match against Djere.
He made it through the qualifiers and then defeated Daniel Elahi Galan in the opener to set up this meeting with Djere. The Serb was 1/6 favourite coming into this encounter and still needed an hour and 49 minutes and a late turnaround to win the match 7-5, 7-5.
Bonadio had his chances too – five of them to break his opponent – but Djere held on to them and took advantage of his opponent’s big-match inexperience to break him late in both the sets.
Djere had earlier gone past Joao Sousa in straight sets too but this is just the second time this season and first occasion on clay that he’s won successive matches in a tournament.
Baez is better pedigreed clay-courter at the moment and we will have to go with him for a win here. Could go into a third set though.
